Marie Graffin Von Bruhl Clausewitz



Marie Sophie Gräfin von Brühl (Countess Marie Sophie von Brühl; 3 June 1779 - 28 January 1836) was a member of the German von Brühl noble family originating in Thuringia.

She was born in Warsaw. On 17 December 1810 she married Carl von Clausewitz, whom she first met in 1803. She published several of his books in the years 1832-34 after his death in 1831, including his most famous one, On War. Additionally, von Brühl wrote a preface to On War.

Her paternal grandfather was Heinrich von Brühl, a German statesman.:

                         at the Marble Palace in Potsdam.  She was tutor to young Prince William.

Columbia - Services for Jackie Lester DeBruhl, 90, will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Eastminster Presbyterian Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Sunday 4-6 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mrs. DeBruhl, wife of the late Marshall P. DeBruhl, Sr., died Thursday, January 1, 2009, after a brief illness. Born in McDowell County, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late William Harvey Lester and Clara Hunt Lester. She was a graduate of Bluefield Business College, Bluefield, W.Va. She was a member of Columbia Country Club and its Ladies Golf Association. She enjoyed the competition of golf tournaments and playing Bridge with her friends and family. She embraced her life: taking care of her home, raising her four children, gardening and birdwatching. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, homemaker, aunt, sister and friend, known for the sparkle in her eye and the feistiness in her conversation. Mrs. DeBruhl was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church for over fifty years. Surviving are her children, Marshall P. DeBruhl, Jr., and his wife, Patricia, of Warwick, N.Y., Susan P. DeBruhl Clarke and her husband, Ray, of Aiken and Teri L. DeBruhl of Columbia; younger sister, Gladys L. Shoda of Bluefield, W.Va.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, caregivers and friends. She was predeceased by her son, William Patrick DeBruhl. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The family expresses gratitude to the staff and residents at the Alterra Sterling Parklane House for their loving care and companionship over the last few years. © The State, Columbia, SC, 4 Jan 2009
