The DeBruhl name originated in Saxony in 1490 with Johann Benjamin DeBruhl. (Johann Benjamin von Bruhl}The first DeBruhl, Michael Samuel DeBruhl landed with Edward Cornwallis' great expedition to found the city of Halifax,N.S. in 1749. All the DeBruhl's in North America are descended from Michael Samuel and Margaret Pring DeBruhl. As far as can be determined at this writing. I would like to put to rest, the notion that DeBruhl was French, not so, Michael Samuel was a Saxon by birth. He spoke high and low German, as well as English and French. He served in the Third Troop Royal Horse Guards. He settled with his family in New Bern, N.C.where he is buried with a marker at Christ Church.Margaret is buried in Georgetown, S.C. at Prince George Winyah Anglican Church. Hi Norman... in doing some research I've come to the conclusion that the artist and engraver Johann Benjamin Bruhl (1691-1763) was the likely father of Michael Samuel DeBruhl. Michael also became an engraver (as did his sons as well). JB Bruhl would be the right age to have a son born in 1725. I've also seen one family tree (unverified) that shows JB Bruhl married Mary Cornwallis which would connect the family name. At this point, it's just speculation, but it seems to make sense. Your thoughts?
